Even with a less packed schedule as of late, here are some of the top student athletes of the week in Ball State sports.
Sydney VanBeek: Volleyball
Freshman Sydney VanBeek led the Cardinals on offense on Sunday versus Akron. She contributed 10 kills and a .421 attacking percentage for the afternoon.
VanBeek grabbed three block assists to elevate Ball State to an 11.0 to 3.0 advantage in total blocks for the match. VanBeek has racked up 80 kills on the season with 1.57 kills per set.
The Ball State women’s volleyball team closes the 2016 regular season this weekend with home matches versus Western Michigan (Friday) and Northern Illinois (Saturday). Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and are produced by Ball State Sports Link on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
KeVonn Mabon: Football
Redshirt Senior KeVonn Mabon had an exceptional outing vs. Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night. He had a career-high 12 receptions, with a total of 149 yards and three touchdowns.
Mabon has moved into second place in career receptions all time for Ball State. Despite Mabon’s efforts in the last home game of his collegiate career, the Cardinals let the lead slip away as the Eagles came away with a 48-41 victory.
Ball State travels to Toledo Nov. 16.
Anne Vormohr: Women’s Swimming and Diving
Freshman Anne Vormohr finished in first place in every event she participated in last Saturday against the Tiffin Dragons.
Vormohr contributed in first place finishes in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. She also finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of (24.69) and finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of (53.92).
Women’s Swimming and Diving travels to Illinois State for their next meet, which starts at 6 p.m. Friday.
Michael Makris: Men’s Golf
Junior Michael Makris finished 50th individually in the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic last Sunday, and was also the top finisher for the Cardinals at the event. Makris finished with a stroke count of 217 (+4).
Ball State finished tied for 19th as a team and had a total stroke count of 878 (+26). The team will return to action in February with the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play on February 13th-14th in Dade City, Florida.
