2017 Summer Camp

The Ball State Sports Link Sports Media Summer Camp is now accepting applications for BOTH Camp #1 (July 10-12) and Camp #2 (July 12-14) only. Limited seats have opened for both camps as of June 28.

Rising high school students (to-be freshmen through seniors) with an interest in sports and digital sports media are encouraged to apply.

This three day workshop, hosted on Ball State’s campus, includes hands-on instructional sessions on digital sports production, sports broadcasting, sports writing, social media and much more.

The camp will feature visiting sports producers and sports personalities. Students will have all-access to work in Ball State’s studios and digital labs, plus take a behind-the-scenes tour of BSU’s sports facilities. They will cover a press conference, produce a sports feature segment and experience what it’s like to work in an ESPN-like environment.


Session topics and activities include:

  • img_8517Experience in-the-field, play-by-play and sideline reporting skills, conduct on-camera interviews and engage in press conference simulations with Ball State head coaches and student athletes
  • Learn about ESPN3 live production plans and replays of sports events
  • Tour Ball State’s state-of-the-art TV studios, Unified Media Lab, award-winning radio station, 91.3 WCRD and interactive digital media labs
  • Hands-on projects include: sports writing, capturing video in the field and building a real-time social media presence
  • Create a professional reel of work within tight sports deadlines
  • Appear on-camera for an in-studio sports show
  • Concept and create a sports story for multiple outlets (TV, radio, digital, social, etc.)
  • Enhance storytelling and interviewing skills
  • Learn about careers in digital sports production and sports media
  • Learn academic skills to succeed in college and beyond
  • Introduction to non-linear editing with Adobe Creative Suite

This exciting new camp is made possible by Ball State Sports Link, the Department of Telecommunications and the College of Communication, Information and Media.

All camp sessions are taught by full-time instructors Chris Taylor, Alex Kartman and Brad Dailey, along with industry professionals from major networks, college athletics and professional sports teams.

Workshops

Workshops are team taught by experienced university faculty and industry professionals to emphasize hands-on activities.

Each camp is interdisciplinary to allow students to explore the many aspects of digital sports production. Campers will be grouped into hands-on workshops by grade and/0r experience level.

All experience levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Sessions will be taught in Ball State’s innovative Digital Sports Production Center and in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building classrooms and studios.

Room & Board

Campers will be housed for two nights in Ball State University’s Johnson Complex, which houses the Emerging Media and Communications Living-Learning Communities for full-time Ball State students.  Each camper will have one roommate. Campers may request a roommate (not guaranteed).

Students will be supervised at all times by camp instructors. Curfew is 11 p.m. each night.  Meals are served daily through Ball State’s Dining Services and included in tuition. Each student will receive a linen set/package with tuition.  No changes in linens provided during stay.

Camp Schedule*

The first day of each camp (July 10 and July 12) will begin at 2 p.m.  Remaining days begin at 8 a.m.  During the camp, sessions will run until 9 p.m., with a camp curfew at 11 p.m. Each camp is scheduled to conclude at noon on July 12 and July 14.  On-Campus registration and residence halls will open at 10 a.m. on the first day of camp.

Camp Tuition & Reservations

16601950_10154348221330840_5256898234062472007_oCamp tuition is $325.00 for resident campers and $250.00 for commuters.

The fee includes all instruction and documentation, housing, linens, meals and snacks, materials, t-shirt and a reporter’s notebook.

All campers will leave with a digital portfolio of their work, available for digital download upon completion of the camp.

The fee does not include transportation to and from campus, although transportation to and from the Indianapolis International Airport can be arranged at an additional cost.

Dining services are provided on the campus, and a meal plan is part of the cost. The meal plan works on a debit basis, starting with a balance that will cover the meals a typical student would choose. More food is available—the dining service accepts cash and credit cards for expenses beyond the meal plan.

For students needing financial assistance, a fee reduction may be requested in writing and may be granted based on demonstrated need as long as funds are available.

Upon acceptance into the camp, students and parents will receive a letter of agreement, including Ball State’s policy on supervision of minors, standards of behavior and medical forms while at camp.
