Makris Wins Indiana Amateur Golf Title

FISHERS, Ind. — Michael Makris, a rising senior on the Ball State men’s golf team, polished off a wire-to-wire victory June 22 at the 117th Indiana Amateur Championship.

Makris posted a four-day total of 5-under par 283 (69-70-70-74) at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club. He finished three shots clear of Brett Widner, the only other player in red figures for the event.

The South Bend product took control of the tournament from the get-go with his 3-under 69 in Monday’s opening round. He never trailed from there. Widner drew even with him three holes into the final round, but Makris responded by playing the next eight holes in 4 under par to regain control.

Makris became the third Ball State player in the past eight years to claim the championship, joining Eric Steger (2010) and Tyler Merkel (2012).

Two other Cardinals finished in the top 10 of this year’s event — Keegan Bronnenberg (T8) and Johnny Watts (T10). Watts closed with a 69 for the low round of the final day.

Ball State players Tyler Green (T25) and Timothy Wiseman (T33) also made the cut this week. Additionally, BSU alumnus Todd Palmer tied for 20th.

Makris played in every tournament for Ball State last year and was the Cardinals’ top finisher twice. He helped BSU to a second-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships in May and is part of a veteran group set to return for the Cardinals next season.
