Ball State Sports Link opens its 2018 spring semester with two live productions on ESPN3 this weekend as the No. 14 Ball State Men’s Volleyball teams hosts No. 6 Brigham Young and Stanford in Muncie.
Both matches, slated for a 7:30 p.m. start, will be streamed live on ESPN 3, available in the ESPN and the WatchESPN apps and on DIRECTV.
The Cardinals are 2-0 after freshman Ben Chinnici picked up his first MIVA Offensive Player of the Week leading Ball State two a pair of opening-weekend victories. The outside attacker finished the weekend with a .533 hitting percentage, 4.67 kills per set and 1.83 digs per set.
The weekend matches will also have a unique USA Volleyball connection.
Ball State head coach Joel Walton was the head coach of the Youth National Team last summer, coaching Stanford’s Jaylen Jasper and Kyler Presho on the USA team. Walton coached against BYU’s Gabbi Garcia Fernandez, who was a member of the Puerto Rican Youth National team. The World Championships were in Bahrain.
Ball State sophomore Matt Szews, the 2017 Co-MIVA Freshman of the Year, was one of 20 athletes selected in 2017 to compete for the USA Junior National Team at the World Championships in the Czech Republic.
Sports Link’s weekend talent team features senior Mick Tidrow and junior Alex Thomas on the call, with sophomore Preston Husband as the sideline announcer and halftime host.
Junior Sam Ahrens will direct both matches, while sophomore Luke Foster is the weekend’s technical director.
ESPN3 is ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network, a destination that delivers thousands of exclusive sports events annually. It is accessible on computers, smartphones, tablets and streaming devices through WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
The network is currently available nationwide at no additional cost who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. It is also available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.
In addition to ESPN’s linear networks, DIRECTV customers with a broadband-enabled set top box will also be able to watch. Customers will not need to log in to access this content, as they will be automatically authenticated.
